Become a Governor

Becoming a governor at Cirrus Primary Academy Trust offers a unique opportunity to shape the educational landscape and make a positive impact on the lives of our pupils.

Local Committees (LCs) provide strategic input into individual school plans and priorities, embed the school’s ethos and values, and monitor alignment of school processes and reporting with overall strategy and policies. They are responsible for localised challenge and support, but do not have legal liability. LCs also contribute to local stakeholder engagement with staff, parents and the community.

At Cirrus Primary Academy Trust our governors come from diverse backgrounds, bringing a range of skills and experiences that contribute to the effective governance of our schools. Whether you have expertise in education, finance, law, human resources, or community engagement, your unique perspective can help guide the Trust's strategic decisions and policies. This is an excellent way to give back to the community, support the development of young people, and gain valuable experience in leadership and governance.

To become a governor at one of our schools, you need to demonstrate a strong commitment to the Trust's goals and values, along with the ability to work collaboratively with other board members.

All governors are appointed by the Governance Officer in conjunction with the LC Chair. They are provided with a structured induction and will receive ongoing support from the Governance Officer and Clerk to the Local Committee.

Cirrus Primary Academy Trust governors are appointed to a four-year term of office and commit to attending at least four two-hour LC meetings each year, as well as training and development sessions. They are also expected to make contributions outside of meetings such as attending schools visits, events and serving on panels.

All governors are required to adhere to the Cirrus Governors’ Code of Conduct, undergo an enhanced disclosure DBS check, and to make an annual Declaration of Interest.

If you are interested in finding out more or would like to be considered for a governor role at one of our schools please email Katie Bird, Governance Officer, kbird@cirrustrust.uk.

Hear from our governors

Melissa Williams - Governor

I have been fortunate enough to be a governor within Cirrus Trust since 2020, initially voted Melissa Williams Governor Photoin as a parent governor and now Chair of the local committee. When embarking on the role, governance was not something I knew very much about and I was thus a little apprehensive; this was short lived as the robust induction process provided me with the confidence I needed to perform my role effectively, and the training offered beyond induction has assisted me in both my personal and professional development. As governors we aim to be critical friends of the school, with our main focus always being on what is in the best interests of the children. With this in mind I take the opportunity to visit the school regularly; these visits allow me to form meaningful relationships with the children and staff to better understand the challenges currently faced within education. I have found being a governor an extremely positive and rewarding experience, and am proud to be part of the team continually striving for excellence.’
